What are the great roads to cycle on in Hidden Europe? In this series, we take you through some of our favourites. A stunning ride into the heart of the High Tatra’s forms this edition; let’s ride to Velické Pleso.

Alpine Style Lake

Pleso is Slovakian for mountain lake and that is exactly what lies at the top of a 7km road that holds an average of 10%. The stunning alpine lake sits in the shadow of the grand Gerlach Mountain. It is the highest peak on the Slovakian side of the Tatra Mountains.

Situated next to the lake is the impressive mountain hotel Sliezsky Dom which acted as one of the checkpoints for the Transcontinental Race in 2017.

The road to the top takes in some of the best tarmac you can find as well as some ‘testing’ sections that make the climb that little bit harder. Traffic is almost non-existent, apart from few hotel guests’ cars and the shuttle bus, no other vehicles are allowed.
