Podia | Festka

An Introduction

Posted in Machines

This is one of four team bikes for the new collaboration between Podia and Festka called ‘Riding Behind the Curtain’.

When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 the Iron Curtain ceased to exist and Soviet control over a large part of Europe dissolved. More than 25 years later and some areas are still fighting to recover with deep pshycological scars still apparent.

Podia has teamed up with Czech framemaker Festka to put together a group of riders who were interested in exploring these parts of Europe. We aren’t just interested in finding the perfect roads, but instead in the scars that remain from a troubled past and how this can inform the future.

Our journeys will be hard, both physically and mentally. The paths we follow might not be the most conventional to take on a road bike, but we hope to show that with a strong spirit of adventure and a bit of determination; anything is possible.

But this isn’t a story of suffering. This is about friends discovering parts of their own continent and the history that goes with it. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad.

Our travels by bike and the people we come across will be documented on a new part of the Podia.cc site through words, photography and film.

To make this project happen we rely on the help of good and very talented friends and the kind support of a selection of companies who share our ideals; Giro, ENVE, Chris King, Fabric and Challenge Tires. We will be publishing posts about the companies that are supporting Podia | Festka over the next few weeks.

Festka were the first frame maker that Podia visited more than a year ago when we began. Since that moment we always knew the work they did was rather special, so we were very excited when a conversation about collaboration began.

The culmination of these discussions is a team of four custom bikes with matching colour schemes but slightly different designs. The pictured bike is an XCr Modern featuring a Campagnolo Chorus 2015 groupset, full ENVE cockpit with SES 3.4 Wheelset, Chris King Pewter headset and hubs as well as a Fabric ALM saddle.

Special thanks to Veloart for building the bike.
Thank you to Foto Buzek Garzyński for studio space for the photo shoot of the bike.
